Tamworth Marsupial Park

No family trip to Tamworth would be complete without a visit to the marsupial park, set on 14 hectares of beautiful native bushland. The park is free to enter and perfect for nature-lovers, with kangaroos, wallabies and emus roaming freely. Kids can hand-feed Indian peacocks and wander through the free-flight aviary. The park also boasts the community-built Adventure Playground where both younger and older children can let off steam. Afterwards, explore the scenic Kamilaroi Walking Track through the park to the Oxley Lookout with views of Flagstaff Mountain. 

Tamworth Miniature Railway

Jump aboard for family fun at Tamworth Miniature Trains. Located in the scenic hills of East Tamworth in the Botanical Gardens precinct, the railway features miniature steam and petrol locomotives running on 600m-long tracks. Open on the third Sunday of each month, the site features a train station, tunnels and bridges making for an exciting ride. Visit the Loco Cafe for drinks and burgers, or enjoy the gardens and picnic pavilion overlooking the tracks.

This award-winning outdoor recreational space is a haven for children of all ages with different zones and play areas to explore. Enjoy free picnic areas, BBQs and an on-site cafe, while the kids climb the exhilarating 9m-high skywalk with giant slides and towers. Bring the bikes or scooters to ride the bike education track with road-like lanes and signage, then cool off on the splash pad in the warmer months. There’s also a play town to explore and a mammoth swing and flying fox for the thrill-seekers.

While you’re at the Tamworth Regional Playground, grab a bite next door at the Hopscotch Restaurant, a local family favourite for breakfast and brunch. The heritage-listed Pig & Tinder Box, one of the first pubs in the New England region, serves up wood-fired pizzas and hearty burgers, while the kids will love Papa Luigi’s pizzeria for a taste of authentic Italy.
