One of the best holiday spots: Perth’s Sunset Coast

One of the city’s best kept secrets, Perth’s Sunset Coast is a great family holiday destination. Stretching from Cottesloe beach in metropolitan Perth, 61 kilometres north to the outlying Perth suburb of Two Rocks, the Sunset Coast encompasses spectacular beaches and beautiful coastline along with pristine hinterland.

Sorrento Beach is positioned half way along the Sunset Coast and only 20 minutes from the Perth CBD. The beachside suburb, and Sunset Coast in general, has a holiday town vibe and the good weather to go with it.

If you enjoy a relaxed seaside lifestyle, sunsets over the water, sandy beaches and warm sunny days, Sorrento Beach is ideal for you.

If you also like the perks of a big city like good shopping, a choice of restaurants and cafes and a bit of nightlife then Sorrento Beach’s proximity to the city is a bonus.

The beaches along the Sunset Coast are generally considered safe for swimming and the numerous diverse surf breaks offer plenty of opportunity for surfers to catch a wave or two no matter what their level of experience. Paved walkways and cycle ways along the coastline and a great variety of cafes and restaurants, many boasting alfresco dining add to the relaxed holiday atmosphere.

Hillary’s Boat Harbour is home to a selection of family oriented attractions, restaurants and shops and is a great place to spend the day. Kids will love Hillary’s the Great Escape, one of Western Australia’s most popular tourist attractions. The leisure park features heated water-slides (great for year round sliding), miniature golf, rock wall climbing, trampolines, a high ropes course and a list of other family related activities suitable for all ages.

The Aquarium of Western Australia is also located at the boat harbour which along with 40 amazing exhibits in Australia’s largest aquarium gives thrill seeking visitors the opportunity to swim with the sharks. Sorrento Quay boasts numerous restaurants, cafes and shops including live entertainment and a myriad of people enjoying the over water location and lively atmosphere.

A day trip to Rottnest Island

Catch the fast ferry from Hillary’s to Rottnest. The ferries leave three to four times a day depending on the season, and the trip takes only 45 minutes. If you’re there during whale watching season chances are you’ll spot a frolicking whale or two on the way. There are also dedicated whale watching cruises leaving daily (during whale season) from Hillary’s and dolphin watching cruises in the off season. Once at Rottnest, there is so much to do you couldn’t possibly see it all in one day.

Hire a bike and tour the island on two wheels, plant yourself on one of the island’s 63 secluded beaches and enjoy fishing, swimming, surfing and snorkelling. Take a guided tour of the island, play mini putt putt, slide down the sand dunes, visit the Family Fun Park, Aqua Park or catch a movie at the Picture Hall. The range of activities on Rottnest is almost endless and visitors can choose to do as much or as little as they want.

Nature lovers won’t want to miss nearby Yanchep National Park. Located slightly inland at the northern end of the sunset coast, Yanchep is famous for its caves and aboriginal heritage. There are over 600 documented caves in Yanchep and daily tours of Crystal Cave allow visitors to view the stalagmites, stalactites and natural limestone formations up close and personal.

The park also operates Aboriginal Experience tours, giving an insight into past aboriginal activities in the area. The park is home to a wide range of Australian flora and fauna which can be appreciated from any of the well maintained walking tracks.

A Sorrento Beach holiday can be whatever you make of it.

Families will love the range of activities from swimming and surfing to fun parks and aquariums. Beach lovers will enjoy the warm waters, white sand and stunning sunsets and outdoor enthusiasts can explore the myriad of water activities, pristine national parks and abundant marine wildlife.
