Sydney has long been known for its great food and over recent years, Surry Hills has become the epicentre of the restaurant scene with a dense population of excellent eateries ranging from high end restaurants through to cheap eats. There are a number of well established ‘hatted’ Surry Hills restaurants sidling up to new innovative cafes and busy authentic ethnic diners.
If it’s fine dining you’re looking for then Surry Hills has plenty of choices. Some of the best known Australian Chefs have restaurants in this area including published chef and TV personality Kylie Kwong, whose restaurant Billy Kwong has patrons lining up down the street to get a taste of her unique Chinese inspired ‘sustainable’ food. Tables at Billy Kwong’s can’t be booked so if you want to enjoy a meal here you’ll have to be at the door before it opens at 6pm.
Nearby is the award winning Marque restaurant headed by celebrated chef Mark Best. Mark has training in French Cuisine and showcases his skills with fusion style Modern Australian food with a French twist. Longrain is one of Surry Hills’ most loved restaurants that has stood the test of time opening its doors over a decade ago and still filling every seat nightly. Longrain boasts a stunning collection of cocktails (perfect for sipping on while you wait for a seat to become vacant), shared communal dining and impressive Thai inspired food.
Other high end restaurants of note include Bodega Tapas Restaurant and Bar, Porteno, run by the owners of Bodega, serving South American Cuisine with a rockabilly feel and the recently renovated progressive Bentley Restaurant and Bar, a favourite amongst Sydney foodies.
If cheap eats are more your style you can rest assured you will be well catered for by the eclectic array of cheap Surry Hills restaurants. From Mexican street food at El Loco to chicken skewers from Longrain’s little brother Shortgrain Canteen & Shop there are a plethora of cheap choices high in flavour and low in cost. It’s easy to pick up lunch or a quick meal with only $10 in your pocket and the selection of cuisines is diverse and food quality great.
Choice Hotels’ Hotel Harry is in easy walking distance of many Surry Hills restaurants and Surry Hills main eat street, Crown St and is located close to a variety of cheap eats, cafes and takeaways. The hotel has its own on site restaurant featuring a range of cuisines and an in-house micro brewery which produces eight award winning beers.
