Echuca is known as Australia’s paddle steamer capital and is Victoria’s oldest river town. Stemming from the Indigenous word meaning ‘meeting of the water’, Echuca is nestled along the glorious Murray River.

You’ll be transported to yesteryear as you meander through the restored historic port and ride on the horse-drawn carriages. Why not take a trip to this tranquil town!

Choice Hotels offers two accommodation options in Echuca. You can unwind at the Comfort Resort Echuca Moama, which peacefully sits on three acres of river gum bush land. The resort is located just minutes away from many Echuca attractions including the Rich River Golf Club, the Murray River and the Moama Bowling Club. There’s plenty of recreational activities to choose from here and you can use the hotel as a base for waterskiing and canoeing.

For something more central, the Comfort Inn Settlement is an ideal option and is within walking distance of the town centre. This hotel is also 10 minutes from the airport and features unique memorabilia from the settlement era, including a windmill. A variety of restaurants and cocktail lounges are located in the surrounding area.

A trip to Echuca would not be complete without a ride on a paddle steamer.

Echuca is home to the largest paddle steamer collection in the world and it’s a great way to experience the area.

There are many services that operate well-restored paddle steamers. Just ask the friendly staff at your hotel for advice!

Take a scenic drive through the largest River Red Gum forest in the world, known as the Barmah State Forest. Here you’ll find several lakes, wetlands and sand hills. The forest is classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because of its importance to the endangered Superb Parrot. You may come across a number of other birds, including Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Nankeen Night Heron and Australian White Ibis.

Echuca has a thriving restaurant scene and we can recommend some local favourites!
